Check out Koala Tapioca in Westwood!

Hey everyone, last night I was lucky enough to check out Koala Tapioca. Koala Tapioca is a great new quick-serve restaurant specializing in Boba tea and a great selection of food from fries to tacos to banh mi sandwiches!

Although the restaurant just opened about two weeks ago, the team behind Koala Tapioca has been around for a few years. In April 2013, UCLA seniors Vincent Ho and David Mangold got advice from David’s family friend to start a boba shop. They started the Koala Tapioca food truck first which became a hit and now, finally they have a permanent home in the UCLA student neighborhood: Westwood!

I never had much boba tea in the past, but I was very excited to try it out and their delicious food, and man I was not disappointed!

The night started off with a few drinks while the food was cooking. From their house milk tea to their speciality Milky Way boba tea to their Tropical Slush (which was mango, passion fruit, and strawberry, with a lychee gel at the bottom, mmm!), every one tasted so, delicious and refreshing. They have a huge assortment of milk teas from the house one to rose, almond, and taro — just to name a few. They have a great variety of drinks whether you want super sweet (milky way) or fruity sweet (tropical slush) or tea with a twist (sea foam jasmine), they have got you covered.

Just when you thought they couldn’t get any better, the food came out and oh my goodness. Everything tasted perfect, better than expected. The popcorn chicken had a bit of a kick to them and the sweet and sour sauce was the cherry on top of that delicious snack. My friend, Aja, was a huge fan.

They have three types of tacos: Bulgogi Beef, Hawaiian Pork, and Teriyaki Chicken. You can buy one or mix and match all three. The tastes were spicy and savory. I enjoyed them because living in Southern California you eat your fair share of tacos, they all typically taste the same, but this had an asian fusion type switch to it. They weren’t heavy either, just the right amount of food.

They also have their special Koala fries which are fully loaded fries with meat, cheese, guacamole, jalapeños, and more. FULLY LOADED. The perfect choice to pick when you just want a little bit of everything: aka probably my go-to pick, that is…until I discovered their sweet potato fries and a reached a point of food enlightenment my tastebuds have not had in quite some time.

They’re waffle sweet potato fries with a special sauce drizzled on top of them. I like to think of myself as a sweet potato fry connoisseur. I have them every time they’re an option so I’ve had them all: super greasy, super dry, and the rare chance when they’re right in the middle. These were those fries. They weren’t greasy at all and I pretty much couldn’t stop eating that entire basket.

Overall, I plan on spending more time at Koala Tapioca. Everything is reasonably priced. The most expensive thing on the menu being the large portion of Koala fries for $7, which you’d definitely be splitting with a friend or two. Definitely worth it. You can have a delicious lunch or even dinner for less than $10. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed!

Go! Koala Tapioca is now open on 10965 Weyburn Ave, Los Angeles, CA. Be sure to follow them on twitter and facebook for more up to date information!

  1. That looks like a nice spot. If I’m ever back to CA I’d like to try it out.
